As the weather gets nicer in Washington, all kinds of festivals are welcoming people to enjoy the outdoors. Here are a couple of festivals coming up. And just in time for Mother’s Day too! Look into these two May festivals in Washington State.
May festivals just north of Seattle
Saturday Mother’s Day Sail
About an hour north of Seattle is Camano Island. If you are a mom, and you like boat ride, go to Cama Beach this Saturday, May 11th between 11 and 4. The Center for Wooden Boats at Cama Beach State Park is treating moms to free boat rides. This is something they do every year to honor mothers.
Do arrive early so you can sign up for the free rides. They fill up pretty fast. You can choose from sailing, paddling, rowing, or motor boat rides. While you are waiting for your ride, you can join in fun activities including toy boat building. Although the Center is free, you will need a Discover pass to park in the state park. Maifest in Leavenworth
Another festival is Maifest in Leavenworth, from May 10 to 12. It is a German tradition going back to the 10th century. Villagers would get together and celebrate spring by planting flowers, playing music and games. And in the square villagers would raise a “maipole”, decorating it with sausages, cakes, flowers, and ribbons. It was believed that dancing around the maipole would bring luck and wealth to the village. And that is how the tradition got started.
Some of the events on May 11th include Chainsaw carving, Bavarian music, and Maipole dancing. The Grand March parade starts at noon. And enjoy Alphorn serenade in the evening. Here is a link to Maifest in Leavenworth this weekend.
These are just two of the festivals happening in May in Washington. Either one could be a special celebration for Mother’s Day, or just plain fun! Free boat rides for moms, or a Bavarian festival.
